Book Sales & Donations

What is it?

The book sales are one of PILA’s largest fundraising efforts, and are critical to supporting the success of the PILA summer grant program. Every year PILA holds multiple book sales within the law school where we take textbooks and study supplements donated from other UVA law students and sell them to current students for a discounted price. Through this donation process we have accumulated a very large selection of books students will need for every class. We also base our prices on the cheapest retail price online so we can make sure to give our fellow students the best price available. The profits from these sales go towards  PILA summer grants which provide summer funding for unpaid public interest and judicial internships.

 

When do the sales take place?

We have 5 book sales a year:

  • Fall: 1L textbook and supplement sale (generally right before classes begin), 2L/3L textbook and supplement sale (generally right before classes begin), hornbook and supplement sale (mid to later in the semester)
  • Spring: Textbook and supplement sale (generally right before classes begin), hornbook and supplement sale (mid to later in the semester)

 

Donations:

PILA generally collects book donations twice a year during and after finals each semester. Fall semester donations are generally collected in October and Spring semester donations in May. Before COVID-19 all donations were collected via a donation table in Slaughter Hall within the law school, and during COVID-19 we utilized other drop-off areas as well, such as in communal spaces at the Pavilion and Ivy Gardens apartments where many law students live for ease.

 

Fall 2021 Textbook Sale Information:

1L Book Sale:

  • To take place in person, in Withers Brown hall lounge
  • The sale will run from 10am to 4pm on Friday, August 13th, Saturday, August 14th, and Sunday, August 15th
  • All purchases will be made via Venmo
  • There will be textbooks for all 1L fall courses, as well as supplements and other 1L books (like “1L of a Ride,” etc.)

2L/3L Book Sale:

  • To take place online (more info coming soon!)
  • The sale will run from 9am to 5pm on Friday, August 20th, Saturday, August 21st, and Sunday August 22nd
  • All purchases will be made via Venmo
  • There will be textbooks, supplements, and hornbooks for all different kinds of upper-level courses
  • There will be an additional online sale after classes start for anyone who changes classes during the add-drop period, details TBA
