Alternative Spring Break

In years past, Alternative Spring Break was a week-long program held during the law school’s spring break week.  It was an opportunity for law students to gain valuable experience by providing volunteer legal services in offices across the country and in a variety of practice areas.  In past years, students have worked in offices such as the Bronx and New Orleans Public Defenders, Legal Aid Justice Center, Mississippi Center for Justice, Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, American Civil Liberties Union, and NY Legal Aid Society.

In the past, students who participated in Alternative Spring Break were eligible to apply their hours towards the 40/80 (1L/2L) hour pro bono requirement for PILA+ grants and UVA Law Summer Public Service grants, provided they were registered to participate at the time of their grant application submission.

*Note that for the 2020-21 academic year due to COVID-19 the Alternative Spring Break program was cancelled and was in turn replaced by a remote Alternative Winter Break program. It is unclear at this time whether the Alternative Spring Break program will resume for the 2021-22 academic year

In the meantime, check back here for updates or contact our Alternative Break Directors Jennifer Craddick (jsc8ad@virinia.edu) and/or Ariana Smith (ajs8kd@virginia.edu) for more info!
